The row about Naomi Chazan and the NIF
The Jewish press in the UK and elsewhere has obsessively been involved in reporting a very foolish attack on Naomi Chazan personally and the New Israel Fund (NIF), of which she is the nominal head. The source of this attack was a puerile bunch of right-wing hotheads in Israel calling themselves "Im Tirzu", based on the famous quote from Herzl (translated from the German to English), "if you will it it is no legend". This is taken to refer to Herzl's prophetic vision tht one day there would arise a Jewish State and that all the obstacles in the way of this could be overcome by the WILL to create this state.
We all need to be aware that in 2010, 62 years after the creation of Israel, the world has shrunk to the so-called global village, which means that the actions of any one group or nation impacts immediately on everyone else. This is largely thanks to multi-media, which Herzl in his wisdom could not have foreseen. In his time around 1900, wars were going on in many parts of the world, which the human population of that time (MUCH less than today's billions) were oblivious too. As a journalist he was drawn to help the plight of the suffering Jewish masses by the notorious Dreyfus affair.
I have personally met Naomi Chazan and heard her speak. I have also donated to the NIF which has carried out many very worthwhile projects in Israel, which the KKL for example would not have the courage to support.
What is the fuss??
